Sons of Avalon: Merlin's Prophecy was written by Dee Marie and published by Conceptual Images Publishing in 2008.
From the time of Merlin's birth from a shattered giant oak tree, he is destined to help bring about the birth of another; the one true king who will be the salvation of Britain. But in order to bring about this birth, Merlin will advise two High Kings to fight through the chaos of Roman abandonment and Saxon invasion.
In this re-telling of the traditional legend of Merlin, Dee Marie has taken us from Merlin's birth, through the chaotic and tumultuous time of King Ambrosius' reign, to the time of King Uther and the conception of the true King of Britain, Arthur. Merlin aids Ambrosius in the early years of his reign and guides him through the wars with the Saxon who lay siege to Britain after the Romans abandonment. Merlin is very close to Ambrosius during his reign, but not so fond of Ambrosius's brother and general, Uther, who butts heads with Merlin at every turn. Merlin knows that the one true king who will bring peace and prosperity to the kingdom will be sired by one of these two men so he must advise them and keep them both safe.
Then when Ambrosius is killed, Merlin realizes that the fate of his beloved country is upon the shoulders of Uther and he sets about to make sure that Uther and the Lady Igraine are mated.
Dee Marie has re-written this wonderful legend of love, murder and revenge with fresh humor and sparkling description. She has given us an insight into the challenges that Merlin faced in order to bring about the salvation of his country and people. The story is well-written and intriguing and will keep even a 'die-hard Merlin fan' engrossed and turning the pages.
I am giving Sons of Avalon: Merlin's Prophecy a 4-spider rating. I can't wait to read the sequel to this story and once again be transported to the time of Avalon and King Arthur.
